(ATLANTA) - Local, state and federal officials announced plans today to open a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Newton. The DRC will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily until further notice.

The purpose of the DRC is to provide assistance and information to people in Baker County affected by last week's deadly tornado. According to Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) Director Charley English, they may register for disaster assistance and receive other services at the center.

The DRC will be located at 139 Roosevelt Street in Newton, Georgia (the old East Baker School). Residents and business owners in Baker County who sustained damages from the tornado and severe storms on March 1-2, are encouraged to apply for disaster assistance as soon as possible by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hearing or speech impaired may apply at 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). You may also apply on-line at www.fema.gov. Applications will be accepted between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

The disaster programs available include temporary housing, disaster unemployment, low-interest loans to repair or replace storm-damaged property, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by insurance or other programs. In addition, residents and business owners may also be eligible for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to help cover losses not fully covered by insurance.

Representatives from GEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Baker County Emergency Management Agency, the Small Business Administration, Red Cross, Department of Human Resources (DHR) Division of Public Health, Georgia Legal Aid, DHR Division of Family and Children Services and the Department of Labor will be present to provide disaster recovery assistance information.

Individuals are encouraged to register for assistance before visiting the center.
