Many lawyers in Georgia may be called upon to deliver legal advice and information to survivors of the March 14-15 tornadoes here in Georgia. Lawyers like you can help provide legal advice or legal information and help comfort survivors.
Many survivors will have questions about property insurance, repair contracts, health care access, emergency food stamps and the replacement of identification documents. Many survivors will not have a current legal need, but will need to know where to turn as legal issues from the storms arise in the coming months.
You may access disaster law resources on our statewide volunteer lawyer support website HERE.
According to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency website, a federal disaster declaration has not been issued. This means that some federal benefits like FEMA grants and loans are not yet available.
Georgia Legal Services Program serves 154 counties in Georgia (excluding Fulton, Gwinnett, Dekalb, Cobb and Clayton Counties), several of which have been affected by the tornado outbreak. You can contact your local GLSP office if you would like to help: www.glsp.org. GLSP has provided disaster legal assistance to Georgians for over 10 years using volunteer lawyers.
The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation serves Fulton County. To learn about potential volunteer opportunities, visit www.avlf.org.
