The need for legal assistance in housing-related disputes has skyrocketed over the past year, accounting for well over all requests from eligible clients. This is due in part to the rate of foreclosures, slumping economy and the change in public housing policies. In light of this, we have decided to focus an entire afternoon on the legal issues faced by low-income tenants. During this training you will learn the basics of eviction defense in Georgia (including how to advocate for clients in cases of constructive eviction and illegal eviction); how to secure the return of a wrongfully withheld security deposit; and the basics of public housing eligibility and termination. This training will be helpful for anyone participating in AVLF’s and Atlanta Legal Aid’s Saturday Lawyer or Eviction Defense programs, or anyone taking a direct referral from an AVLF newsletter.
